Discover Hope

Waiting With Confidence

“Yet, I am confident I will see the Lord’s goodness while I am here in the land of the living. Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.” – Psalm 27:13-14 (NLT)

Holding on to confidence, even in dark times, is possible—with proper focus

The psalmist wrote these words during a highly dark season in his life. Psalm 27 was likely written while David was fleeing for his life—either from King Saul or later during the rebellion led by his son, Absalom. Reading this psalm closely reveals how David wrestles with betrayal, fear, and the constant threat of death.

Rather than give in to despair, David fixes his eyes on God’s presence and discovers bold confidence. His raw vulnerability is refreshing, revealing a heart that trusts God even when enemies press in, and life feels uncertain.

He is razor-focused on God’s goodness, expecting to experience God’s faithfulness here and now, in the land of the living. However, his words are more than a wishful hope for a distant, “someday in the future” reward.

This confident hope is more than shallow optimism. It’s a deep, tested faith—shaped by conflict, fear, and the constant threat of death. Despite his dark season of fearful struggle, David clings to one unshakable truth: God is good, and His goodness will appear!

This mindset challenges our modern impulse to seek quick fixes. Instead, David models a holy resilience rooted in trust.

You may be familiar with the “call and response” rhythm to encourage focus and emphasize a truth.

In religious settings, it is common for a pastor or priest to proclaim a truth: “God is good!”, and to listen for the congregation’s response: “All the time, God is good!”  Or, God’s goodness is coming!”  “Even now, God’s goodness is appearing.”

This “call and response” reinforces a truth and encourages us to believe that reality.

In seasons of waiting, we can borrow this rhythm to speak truth over our lives. When doubt whispers, “This will never change,” respond with: “Even now, God’s goodness is appearing.”

But knowing God’s goodness is coming doesn’t make waiting easier.

That’s why David doesn’t just say “wait.” He repeats it and surrounds it with reminders of what waiting requires if we are to wait confidently.

Waiting confidently requires:

  • Patience: Think of Joseph, imprisoned yet trusting that God’s dreams would come to pass.
  • Courage: Like Esther, who faced the king not in her strength, but in faith.
  • Fearlessness: Like Paul, who kept preaching despite beatings and imprisonment.

To wait with confidence is not passive waiting. It’s active trust. It’s staying spiritually alert, emotionally grounded, and faithfully anchored—because we believe God’s timing is not only good, it is perfect.

When life feels fragile and uncertain, David’s declaration reminds us that we, too, serve a God who is present and active in our lives—even when the waiting seems slow. Like David, we can focus on God’s goodness and faithfulness. This laser-like, intentional focus ignites hope and inspires confidence.

“Lord, help me to wait with courage and trust, confidently knowing Your goodness is not delayed—it is perfectly timed.”

REFLECTION

  • Where do I desire to see God’s goodness in “the land of the living” right now?
  • What would it look like for me to wait with patience AND courage?
  • Am I willing to allow God’s goodness and faithfulness to refresh my weariness and renew hope?
